Open day success!

Well Friday 13th turned out to be a lucky one for us! When preparing in the morning the sky threatened to rain a couple of times and had us worried but it came up trumps and gave us a perfect afternoon. It felt like one of our busiest open days yet with lots of activities for all to get involved in. The horses behaved in their displays (phew) and stood perfectly for people to come and have a go at grooming them. The farms home-made apple juice was a huge success with all of it being sold on the day! We…

EE come to the farm!

This week we welcomed a group of volunteers from EE to the farm to help us do various tasks. The group split into two and focused on finishing parts of the slabbing at the front of Berrys Cafe and also stained all the furniture and decking at the back of the Cafe. The slabbing proved to be an extra hard task as some slabs which had been laid previously had not set and the concrete had to be removed and re-laid. The decking and furniture was drinking up the oil that was painted onto it making it a never-ending task for the group outside the…

N Power come to the farm in force!

Three weeks ago 60 N Power employees joined us at the farm over the course of two days to take on various projects around the farm. Projects included fencing around the back of the barn to provide a secure area to store farm machinery and tools, Edging the pathway down the the menage to tidy the space up and stop weeds from growing into the pathway, Re-edging the  pathway down to the Forrest schools area as most of it has now rotted away, Laying the foundations and constructing a green house that was donated to the farm behind the existing…

Hay Fever!

Wow what a change in the weather! We have been cooking in the hot weather at the farm but have carried on with all our daily tasks as best we can! We decided to have a go at making our own hay this year from the winter paddocks. This has a couple of benefits as we know what is going into it (weed free) and it is cheaper to make. A local farmer came in to do the work for us and we are really pleased with how it has turned out. We have counted around 100 bales from 3…

Quick update!

What a busy few weeks it has been at the farm! The training rooms have become increasingly popular to hire out as well as being there for the project workers to use when they have meetings. The new chickens have settled in well although with only 1 egg produced so far we are still waiting to be over run by all the eggs they lay ;). There are plenty of vegetables now planted in the veg patch ready to get growing to supply Berry's cafe. Despite their muzzles the horses have still taken advantage of the spring grass and look…

RSA come to the farm!

Yet another busy week at the farm! A group of employees from RSA joined us for the day  on Wednesday to help us with some jobs that we often don't get time to do. They decided that they would give our pool room and toilets a much-needed lick of paint! The toilets are now nice and bright and look new again! The pool room is a porta cabin where the  project workers have their morning meeting, breaks and have the chance to keep dry if its raining! It was beginning to look a bit old and in desperate need of…

Its May!

The farm is looking fantastic and is starting to burst with colour. The orchard is beginning to blossom. Hopefully we will have a nice warm summer as the wash out last year hindered all the fruits development and ripening. The horses are dropping their coats now and are leaving their body doubles all over the field! They are sulking during the day as they now have to wear their muzzles. These are to help reduce their grass intake so that they don't gain too much weight on the nice spring grass! The menage is looking great in the sunshine! It…

End of April update…

The horses have now moved onto their summer grazing and are very happy to have lots of lovely grass to gorge themselves on! We went up there on Friday morning to find all of them having a morning snooze! Basil couldn't even make the effort to stand up and greet us... The farm shop is slowly filling up again, with lots of contributions from the wood work team. The shop will fill up with lots of produce from the vegetable beds over the next few months... Summer hanging baskets will be available to order soon, in the mean time the…

Jelf come to the farm!

A group of 18 employees from Jelf (consultancy company) joined us at the farm yesterday to develop our recycled garden in the horticultural area. The old saying of 'April showers' was definitely proven yesterday and the group got blasted with strong winds, heavy showers and sun! There was a real team spirit amongst the group and they took on all aspects of the challenge with real enthusiasm (even in the rain)! The team constructed a tyre wall, a patio area and a living roof! The Berry's cafe team supplied a much needed lunch of spicy carrot soup and spaghetti bolognase…
